Infinity Ward decided to break free from the World War II theme previous iterations of the Call of Duty series featured with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare last November. In the developer’s first foray into modern combat, Infinity Ward did not innovate so much as they perfected an experience and made so many other war-based efforts pale in comparison. Call of Duty 4’s single player is incredibly immersive and engaging, while the online multiplayer likely made many gamers quickly forget all about Halo 3.

More than four months after the game’s initial release, Infinity Ward is seeking to keep gamers interested and filling the online lobbies with a four-pack of new multiplayer maps for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The maps, titled “Killhouse,” “Creek,” “Chinatown,” and “Broadcast,” all keep with the overall feel of the game while each offering its own aesthetic and style of play. All four have been crafted with a great amount of visual detail.

“Creek” is a large stage with a narrow corridor of wilderness, a few caves, and two opposite areas with run-down buildings. The elevations above the narrow trench between the two areas provide well camouflaged nests for snipers, while the homes prove great bases and sites over which to battle for control.

“Chinatown” is a bit smaller horizontally, but offers a compact center of buildings with winding stairwells to basements and second floors. The buildings also provide open windows from which to pick off enemies and great cover for big team firefights. An open lawn area, however, is an awkward point for the map.

A large portion of “Broadcast,” as its name might imply, is a technology building with a huge open computer room. An open portion of the building with busted-out windows faces a smaller bombed out building across a street. The main building has multiple entrances and exits and there are plenty of methods for attack on the first and second level, proving the map to be one of the most fun of the bunch in basic team deathmatch.

“Killhouse” is a smaller level designed for the “Cage Fight” mode. The claustrophobic nature and tight lines of vision keep the players on their toes throughout fights in this stage, but overall, the map just isn’t very exciting. One-on-one fights also get boring fast and more players could turn this map into something pleasantly chaotic.

Visually, the four new maps, especially “Chinatown” and “Creek,” offer something different from much of the originals. As far as gameplay goes, the design at first glance does not seem as solid as the originals, but after repeated play-throughs the nuances of each reveal themselves to contribute to the unique experience of each map. $10 may seem like a hefty price for four maps but it’s definitely worth the cash to add these four to the rotation.
