Assault Heroes 2 is a solid top-down shooter that doesn’t necessarily offer anything innovative to the genre; however, its fluid controls, weapon tweaks and extended gameplay make it a mind-numbingly fun shoot ‘em up for arcade fans.
The barely-existent alien invasion plot is quickly introduced in scrolling text while launching the game and it isn’t very intriguing. The plot isn’t a strong point of the game. It could have just as easily read, “Shoot and move to save the universe,” and served the same purpose. But what the game lacks in narrative, it makes up for in frantic action and hordes of enemies waiting to be mowed down.
The main means of conveyance in the game is, again, the reliable multi-purpose jeep, which comes stocked with four easily swappable (and upgradeable) weapons. The standard minigun, flamethrower and flak cannon are all present, and the additional freeze gun makes for some interesting gameplay, especially when used in co-op. Most enemies caught in its blast will be slowed or thoroughly frozen, and subject to further humiliation in the form of a flamethrower meltdown or flak cannon shatter. What is most entertaining about all of the weapons is their balance, as any one of them would suffice to use throughout the campaign without compromising the run and gun spirit.
In addition to the new weapons are new vehicles to be hijacked. Unfortunately, nothing has the same functionality and versatility of the jeep, which may be a bit stifling to some players.
For fans of the genre, this is an easy purchase, as $10 guarantees at least 8 to 10 hours of action, which can be extended through the value of multiplayer co-op, both on and offline.
