Alan Andrews i play guitar and sing
Could you give a brief summary of your bands origin?
We're just four guys that love music. Bill, Mark and I have been playing in bands together since were fifteen and living in california. Bill started playing Bass and I was playing drums we bounced around on instruments and ended up both plying guitar and i ended up singing. we also bounced between denver and california and ended up in denver. The photo atlas started about 5 years ago and nick joined the band about a year ago.
What inspired your band name?
We use to practice in Bill's parents garage and there was an atlas on a shelf so we became Atlas. About a year into the band we were about to release a cd and realized there were a series of bands named atlas so we wanted something all are own. we wanted to keep something close since we had already been building a fan base so we were sitting in our favorite bar the hi-dive and there was a photo booth and someone said how about The Photo Atlas. and we went with it so i guess time and place inspired our band name.
In your own words describe your sound to someone who’s never heard of you?
We're a rock band, it's loud and fast with a beat you can dance to. or indie dance punk
If you guys could share the stage with any band (past or present) who would it be and why?
I think Refused or at the drive in or cursive. those bands have had a huge impact on me. and on my life.
What current projects are you guys currently working on?
We're about to release an EP called "to silently provoke the ghost" in april we want to follow it up with a full length pretty quick. so in between touring we're gonna be working on that.
What is the song writing process like?
It's a collabrative effort. i end up piecing the songs together. someone will bring a riff or a part and we'll build from there. i'll throw the lyrics on when the music is finished. we do have a method to our madness but if someone saw us working it would probably look pretty crazy.
Who are some of your main influences?
i think when we started the energy of at the drive in really inspired us. We wanted to be in a crazy rock n roll band like that. There was also a band in denver that was out when we moved to denver and formed called black black ocean. They had the same energy but it was something you could dance too. Another band, Desapararcidos we were all really into. They were loud but poppy and kinda messy i guess but really melodic and awesome. We have other influences now like minus the bear, pinback,The Faint, tokyo police club and many many more.
What are some of your favorite Venues to play at when on tour?
The Norva in Virginia is probably the best venue ever. It's kinda too much to take in. I'm still amazed thinking about. But my favorite place is the 9:30 Club in Dc. I know it's not the originally but when we've played here i'm still like damn Fugazi started here.
What were some of your favorite bands you’ve gotten the chance to share the stage with?
We've played with minus the bear a handfull of times, they've been my favorite. Playing with alkaline trio was awesome. We toured with the bravery a few years back that was crazy.
Anything that you would like to say in closing?
I think everyone should get out there and create something!
