To start with, for those who don’t know, what kind of label is Death To False Hope? It’s a fairly pioneering concept.
DTFH is a digital download label, where basically people can download albums for free from our artists and we highly encourage people to donate to the band. I wouldn’t say we are pioneers, because we borrowed our concept from Quote/Unquote Records, but outside of them and a few others we are the only labels working within this model.
And the label has been up and running how long? What kind of success have you experienced in that time?
We just passed year two. We’ve seen successful for many of our acts. 10-4 ELEANOR (now ELWAY) signed with Red Scare. DIRECT HIT!, MIXTAPES, and CAPTAIN WE’RE SINKING have all released vinyl with Kind of Like Records. We have been able to put out five compilations featuring our favorite unknown acts next to bands like THE BOUNCING SOULS, Joey Cape of LAGWAGON, RED CITY RADIO and LOOK MEXICO.
Yet, you’re a donation- based label and you don’t take a cut of your bands proceeds? How can you sustain that?
Well, we got a great deal on our website so we don’t have much to sustain. The biggest thing is finding time. We love what we do and respect the bands so much that it is worth every second of our time.
So I understand you’ll be celebrating your 2nd anniversary by holding a festival in Durham, NC next week? What’s that going to be like?
400 close friends consuming way too much PBR while bear hugging and singing along.

I’m told that a lot of people have come out to support your efforts coming from as far as Australia for this fest. How great is that?
It’s totally flattering how people are coming from all over the world for this. It really shows that we created something people believe in and respect.
So it seems you have actually formed a cohesive music community through the innovation of the label. What’s coming up in 2011?
First off we have new records from STAGE FRIGHT THERAPY, LEWIS TURN OUT, and LONG SHOT HERO. Then we picked up two new bands I’m totally stoked on- CIVIL WAR RUST and WORSHIP THIS, who are both phenomenal. Cannot begin to even tell you how stoked I am to be working with both of those bands. SANDWICHES and MIXTAPES have a split planned for spring. And we are teaming up with Juicebox Recordings for a USA vs. Canada compilation.
You’re also well known in the larger punk world as a musician, songwriter and a producer, and I know you are also working on another project, LOOSE CHARM. That’s a more traditional project? What are you doing with that these days?
LOOSE CHARM is doing well. We just released the vinyl edition of “The Sons and Daughters of Woody Guthrie” by RED CITY RADIO. It is limited to 500 copies on 1 sided 12” vinyl with a silk- screened B-side. I’m still hard at work with THE SANDWICHES. We will be doing a split with MIXTAPES this spring. Then we’ll be releasing a new EP this summer, and then sometime in fall we will be releasing a collection of compilation tracks and cover songs.
