Jim Lindberg sits down with us to talk about the making of the new video for The System. It was great to hear Jim making music in a three-piece setting with the new album (you guys are in for a treat next Tuesday when this drops!), but getting to see it for the first time in this video gives me chills! Can’t wait for US tour dates! Enjoy the video, and a few words with Jim…

What was the initial concept for the video?

The initial concept was to do something that reflected both the themes in the song and the artwork from the album.  Where we live in the South Bay of L.A. is this great little beach town surrounded by all this industry and oil refineries.  Our practice place is surrounded by it.  So we took this satellite photo and it zooms down to our practice place and we’re in there playing and we show images of the system at work and headlines referring to how destructive it all is.

Where was the video shot, and were these fun locations?

The video was shot in and around the South Bay, all kinds of refineries and industrial complexes and oil pumps and freeways, just to show how these things are connected, that there’s this big monolithic system around us that were incapable of escaping – it’s like being in the belly of the beast, and that’s why we put some surfing videos into it as well.  You have to find your ways of escape and surfing is that safety valve for us.  I surf in front of a huge Chevron refinery.  L.A. surfers are the most hardcore in the world.  It’s easy to surf in paradise.  Try it in front of a sewage treatment plant.

Obviously this is both the easiest, and hardest video BLACK PACIFIC has ever shot, but you are no rookie to this game. How did this compare to some of the PENNYWISE video shoots?

I’m not going to pretend I love doing videos.  I like rocking out but I never got into this to be a little rock star dancing around on the screen – I couldn’t feel more uncomfortable in that situation.  But I like playing the song so that’s what I do – I just rock out like I’m at a show – it’s just that the camera’s running.  But after I shoot it and see it once, I never look at it again.  You’ll think it’s false modesty but I’m probably the least narcissistic person in the world.  I like playing the stuff but I don’t like the other side of it, all the promotion etc.  But I think if a video helps a song and gives people a visual to go with it that that’s ok.

Do you guys have plans to shoot another video off of the new album any time soon?

I think we want to do one for Defamer because that song is so ripe for video.  It’s all about the greedy fame mongers around us running our media and how all I care about is raising a toast to all the stupidity and saying “We’re all to blame” because we suck it up everyday.  Could be fun for visuals.  Also we had an idea to make “When it’s over” into something really sick and depraved, so that could be fun too.

I hear that you are headed to Europe, and I keep hearing murmurs of some West Coast dates…. What’s coming up in the near future for you lads, once this album drops?

We are definitely going to Europe – we have a few small shows when the album comes out – and then the Epicenter 2010 festival and then we’re looking to see what we want to do next year.  The Europe tour was somewhat longer than I’m used to but it’s a good opportunity for the band so we’ll rough it out.  Then it will just be about getting out there and playing shows when they feel right.  But there will be a lot of cool things coming soon from our band so everyone should check out our website from time to time, or follow us on one of the social networks that Big Brother created to spy on you and get all the details!!!
