Death To False Hope Compilation – 50th Release Celebration!

admin September 2, 2010 7

Last weeks release of Canada’s BRUTAL YOUTH marked the 50th release for starling underground label, Death To False Hope Records. In a short amount of time, Scotty Sandwich (yes, of The Sandwiches!) and Jonathan Minor have made a real impact for some bands, and in the underground in general, as well as propose new outlets and approaches for a label in this new digital-age. DTFH is based around a web-site that allows people to listen to all of their releases, and download it for either free, or a donation if you wish. 100% of these monies go right into the BANDS paypal accounts. Payment for DTFH: just being stoked to share some bands they care about with the world.

In celebration of their 50th release, we have worked with DTFH to bring you this exclusive digital label-sampler. Download this, and see what bands these guys have discovered, and brought to your ears! We also reached out to some of the DTFH bands, and some common friends with DTFH, to ask them about their interactions with label drunk, and head-honcho, Sir Scotty Sandwich….. I’m sure you will see from their responses that his passion and enthusiasm is genuinely received, and appreciated, across the board. Cheers guys, and looking forward to the next 50+ releases! <3 AMP

Before we get this started, a quick letter from the editor: Scotty Sandwich  did in fact pick a KICKER in the FOURTH round of our 10 man Fantasy Football league.

Scott is a really rad dude.  I didn’t really know him and messaged him out of the blue and he was absolutely receptive to putting our album out, and has been really helpful in a lot of other ways too.  To me DTFH is bridging gaps and building networks the way that a label should.  Not only that but everything they put out rocks.  To me DTFH is synonymous with quality underground music and that is why having them put out our album is a badge of pride.

Working with Scotty is always a pleasure. He’s got the ear and the drive to really help artists grow, not to mention, he’s probably the most passionate guy I’ve ever met. Hearing him talk about a new artist, you can tell he really and truly cares. He’s also helped me find some amazing bands. Sometimes I’ll look through my iTunes and realize my most played releases that week are all from Death To False Hope.

What’s so great about Death To False Hope is that it was built to help small bands get their start. You can peruse their catalog and find artists who have really grown since their short time on the label. I can only imagine how great that must feel.

What can I say about Scotty? I mean, he’s one of the most honest and hardworking people in music today. His mission is simple: To release music he loves. He approached me out of the blue one day asking to release the demos that my side project Fierce Brosnan had recorded. We never in a million years thought the demos would see the light of day, nor did we record them with that purpose in mind. But Scotty loved them, and wanted others to share his enthusiasm. My band Let Me Run has worked with him on one compilation chocked full of great artists, and are in the works on a tribute compilation, which we couldn’t be more excited for. He has been nothing but supportive of the music my band mates and I make, and I couldn’t appreciate that more. I want to congratulate him on the releases he has done, and wish him the best of luck with his future releases. Good job, my friend.  I wish more people shared your enthusiasm and all around awesomeness!

Truth is, I’ve never met Scotty, and the more I think about that the more I think it says something about him. He’s under no social obligation to help me out, or to like the things we do; he just wants to get the music to the people, and that I truly dig.

I’ve heard tales of him drinking White Russians from a sippy cup though, which makes me totally assured that when I get the chance, I’d love to party with that guy!

Being on this label is probably the best thing that happened to us. It is getting our record out to people around the world, and we keep meeting other sweet bands through it. Scotty is like this curator guy I’ve never met, even though he’s helped us book tours and I’ve ended up meeting tons of other people through him, and some of them have never met him either. Long live the Internets!

Geoff Thank You,

The Please & Thank Yous

Scotty is a son of a bitch. We ended up being on one of the DTFH comps he had put together, which started our relationship. After weeks of begging the shit out of him, he finally submitted and let us join the DTFH family. Scotty has kept on our asses about getting our new record out on time and has been very patient. I don’t know of a single person who’s doing more for underground music at this moment in time than Scotty is. He’s truly a great guy and will bend over backwards to help any band he likes. When we get to meet him in person he can expect to be bombarded with tons of dude kisses and thank yous’ for the hard work he has been doing since the inception of DTFH. RANDOM ORBITS LOVES YOU SCOTTY!”

The Random Orbits

Pinto here from Minnesota’s Calling  to congratulate Scotty on 50 releases!!! Just wanna say it’s rare in this industry now to have a label reach out to you and WANT to release your stuff, but that’s exactly the type of person Scotty is; a man of the music. He’s been nothing but a pleasure to work with and I hope to continue to work with him in the future. Keep up the great work Scotty!!!!!

Minnesota’s Calling

Dealing with Scotty and DTFH has been a blessing, especially for ‘Chilling Winston’ from Australia. Having the support of DTFH has meant ‘Chilling’ were able to get a lot more exposure, especially in the US, than they would have otherwise received, and in turn has also given more exposure to DTFH among the supporters of the band in Australia. We are amazed at the high quality of other acts on the label, which rival even some of the bigger labels, and look forward to working with Scotty in the future.

Scotty, through one bloodshot eye, has been an overwhelming help to Junker. From nothing more than an email via a mutual friend, Scotty has worked his ass off promoting our record and turning us onto a ton of amazing friends, asking absolutely nothing in return. He does it for the love, and this guy always delivers. While we fear for the size of our bar tab upon crossing his path, it pales in comparison to the enormous debt we owe Scotty and everyone at DTFH. Hey Scotty – how’s it feel to wake up and be the shit? – Much Love –

JUNKER

Ahh…what is there left to say about Scotty and the team at DTFH Records? Loyalty, Pride, DIY, love; these are all the words we use when we describe Death To False Hope Records to those who are not in the know, Scotty in particular; he is the type of person that everyone in the scene should strive to be. If cloning becomes as normal as going to the grocery store to pick up some tofurkey, then we should clone 30 million versions of him and every struggling band that deserves attention will have 30 million strong backing them. I personally have listened to just about every band he has signed and every band has a unique and amazing sound. I find myself with 30 albums just from the label alone.

Being in San Francisco, we have the misfortune of being on the other side of the country and have yet to actually meet him, though we’re remedying that next year. I have only spoken to him through emails and we immediately hit it off after talking about Sponge being one of the most underrated bands from the 90s.

Scotty and the folks at DTFH have treated us with nothing but the utmost respect and we love being a part of the family. We released our first full length album through them in March and it has been downloaded almost 500 times; we’re looking forward to releasing more with them.

The Sweet Revenge

Scotty always has a knack of discovering my next favorite band.  Whether it’s Mixtapes, Arliss Nancy, Think Big or most recently Kadets and Young Tom Fury, Scotty and Death to False Hope have put out 50 amazing releases.  Well, except for the Sandwiches.  They kinda suck.

Scotty Sandwich: the man, the myth, the legend.  We owe this dude a lot.  Months ago Scotty hit me up about doing our 8 song debut EP through Death To False Hope Records, and we’re eternally grateful for the opportunity.  Thanks to him we’ve gotten close to 600 downloads of our EP so far, and it keeps going up.  Even bigger than that is the sense of community and friendship between the bands on the DTFH roster that he has built.  We played a show in Philly a few months back, and I was approached by someone who told me, “Yeah dude, I think we’re label mates!”  This is the kind of thing that was always so appealing to me about punk rock when I was younger, and I’m glad to work with someone like Scotty who feels the same way.  Only downfall is the dude decided to come up north when we played North Carolina (still owe you a beer Scotty!).  Other than that, he is responsible for our music reaching a lot of people who it otherwise may have never gotten to, and for that I just want to say thank you.  DTFH TAKEOVER!”

Glory Bound

Death To False Hope means Community. In the few months of knowing Scotty I have gained a friend, if not a whole family. Not only did he provide my band with an outlet for which other people to discover our music, we we’re brought into a family of other people just like us. With no money involved you would tend to not expect much, but Scotty does anything within his power to help any band, on the roster or not. Connecting people through punk rock isn’t something that’s always easy, but DTFH has created a web that spans the country and soon the world. I’m really happy to be a part of something as genuine as this, and cant wait to see what the future holds. If you ever see ‘em around, BUY HIM A BEER!!!

The Working Dead

Scotty is an awesome guy who loves great music and helping out bands simply for the sake of sharing these bands he loves with as many people as possible. The other bands on this label are all great too; none of us would be part of the DTFH family if Scotty didn’t thoroughly enjoy the music we all make.

The Campaign 1984

Ever since we decided to put out our EP with Scotty’s label, he has been nothing but a help for us between booking shows in North Carolina and just promoting us. We are stoked to be working with him and will definitely have him host our full length for sure. Not only is it sweet to work with him, but the other bands on the label are absolutely amazing.

Rain Over Battle

Scotty loves to pass himself off as a drunkard, and, to a certain
extent its true, but the truth of the matter is that Scotty is
incredibly passionate about music and is probably the hardest working
man in punk rock. The work he is doing for DTFH, promoting bands,
putting together shows, working and investing in Loose Charm, its all
so incredible. The man lives for nothing but punk rock, his friends,
and his loved ones. It’s a new world out there in the music industry,
and DTFH is on the front line, heralding a better future.

The Sandwiches are like The Postal Service if one was a fat kid and the other was into Fecal Pornography.
