If ever there were a band tailor- made for the Occupy Movement it’s Anti-Flag (and maybe Rage Against the Machine). So it came as little surprise to anyone who has followed the anti-authority political punk band from Pittsburgh that they were extremely supportive of the global protest movement, penning a letter and manifesto of sorts on their web site in solidarity with the movement and showing up in New York to play a few songs for the protesters (including a stellar Clash cover).I’m not sure if their latest album, the furious and aptly titled the General Strike, was recorded pre- or post- Occupy, but regardless the album could be a soundtrack to the movement boiling over with themes of distrust, anger and unjust corporate greed. Their hardest record in years, with protest songs like “The Neoliberal Anthem” and The Clash-worthy “The Ranks of the Masses Rising,” the band is clearly fed up with the status quo and it shows in their lyrics and the intensity with which the songs thunder out. Nothing sounds as melodious as righteous indignation, even when backed by hardcore punk rock. (John B. Moore)
