FOOTBALL, ETC. hail from Houston, TX, with a sound that feels more at home in the Midwest during the mid-‘90s; a time and a place that seems synonymous with emo before it was a dirty word. The band calls to mind classics like BRAID, CHRISTIE FRONT DRIVE, and SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE, while adding indie rock influences that let the band stand on their own. Add to that some great vocals by singer Lindsay Minton that at times make me think of Michael Stipe’s slower material. And REM rules, so that’s a compliment. Non-sports fans, don’t be alarmed by the band’s name; despite that, the album title, and nearly all the song titles coming from football or general sports terminology, the lyrics are blissfully free of on-field subject matter. Fans of MINERAL and RAINER MARIA, definitely take note of this band. (John Flynn)
